In case you missed the headline news today, another tragic shooting took place last night, this time in Las Vegas where 59 people were killed by a lone gunman. Over 500 others were also injured as the gunman shot from a 32nd floor window of the Mandalay Bay Resort into a large crowd gathered outside for a concert.
My prayers and condolences go out to the families and victims of those killed or injured in this incident. There is no explanation that will be adequate. Since the lone gunman shot himself, the families will also have no satisfaction of justice. It is truly the purest form of tragedy. A complete loss for all involved, and for us as a nation.
Already, the talking heads are again calling for gun control. As tragic as this incident is, along with others like it, I simply cannot support a repeal of the 2nd amendment. As the old saying goes, “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people”. Guns just happen to be one of many possible tools to carry out the murders.
This past July in France, a terrorist used a truck weighing about 20 tons to kill 84 people, including 10 children, while injuring 202 others. Should we institute truck control laws?
The Las Vegas shooter could have just as easily rigged up a set pipe bombs or grenades and launched them into the crowd, which would have had the same devastating effect, and possibly have killed even more people.
Guns are just one of many possible tools deranged minds can utilize to commit these heinous acts. By passing laws which restrict guns, we are managing only one path a deranged mind can take. It is not possible to manage all paths without a complete repeal of all constitutional freedoms for the remainder of us. Such freedoms include driving trucks, carrying knives, hunting, or buying everyday household cleaners which can be used to make a poisonous gas, among others.
Instead of taking away the freedoms of peaceful people, what we should be doing is asking why deranged minds exist, and working to prevent them from getting to the point of snapping. Somewhere, someone must have known this guy had a few loose screws upstairs. After all, most people don’t wake up one day and decide to see how many harmless people they can kill. He must have provided some ignored hints to someone, through strange comments or actions.
As the investigation continues, I am sure a motive will be revealed. Regardless of the motive, I am just as certain that restricting the rights of peaceful people to own guns and use them responsibly will not prevent deranged minds from injuring others, and perhaps a lot of others. Let’s treat the root cause of these tragic outcomes, instead of superficially handling the symptoms, and tools used to commit such acts of violence.
